Trauma

Traumatic experiences come in many forms. It is not possible to list all the ways someone may experience trauma in their life. Some common examples are car accidents, house fires, combat, witnessing a death and illness. When people experience or witness an event that threatens their life or the life of someone they love, they may have reactions that continue well after the event. Sometimes people experience reoccurring thoughts about the trauma and have difficulty focusing after a traumatic event. Sometimes people begin to feel hopeless and question their future.

What can you do?

Fortunately, there are treatment methods that work for those who have been victimized. Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT, is the treatment of choice for dealing with and recovering from problems related to Trauma. Deciding to get outside help after experiencing trauma is not always easy. Some helpful questions to ask yourself may be, “Am I experiencing…”

  • Intrusive thoughts about the trauma?
  • Sleep difficulties?
  • Nightmares?
  • Changes in appetite?
  • Avoidance of reminders of trauma?
  • Difficulty concentrating?
  • Feeling Hopelessness?

Answering “yes” to several of the questions above may indicate that therapy may be beneficial to you. The Counseling Connection is here to help. Call us for an appointment at 304.340.3676.
